“Chinese defense strategy not about hegemony, expansion or spheres of influence”

Kathmandu, 26 July  (2019) – At a time when the Chinese defense ministry has outlined plans for the further modernization of the armed forces in its latest defense white paper entitled “China’s National Defense in the New Era”, western media have been circulating speculations against this plan.

Dismayed by growing global influence and popularity of alternative world leadership model offered by China, some think tanks, despite fact deficiency, have left no stone unturned to prove that China is heading towards military aggression.

As the 92nd anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is being celebrated, China has made it clear that it will never seek defense strategy of aggression. During the reception organized by the embassy in Kathmandu on the occasion of 92nd anniversary of PLA establishment, Hou Yanqi, the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal emphasized that China will pursue a national defense policy that is defensive in nature.

“Never Seeking Hegemony, Expansion or Spheres of Influence is the distinctive feature of China’s national defense in the new era” stated ambassador Yanqi during her speech adding that, “China’s national defense in the new era serves the efforts to build a community with a ‘Shared Future for Mankind’.

Highlighting the comprehensive partnership of cooperation between two countries, Ambassador Yanqi mentioned state visit of Nepali president Bidya Devi Bhandari to Beijing during second Belt and Road Forum, as a milestone of China-Nepal relations with far-reaching significance.

During the ceremony the chief of Nepali Army, General Purna Chandra Thapa applauded PLA for its great contribution in Chinese history. Remarking the growing ‘qualitative exchanges’ between PLA and Nepal Army, Gen Thapa expressed his sincere gratitude for the help offered by PLA while he reminded Nepal’s sincere commitment to ‘One-China Policy’ and Chinese security concerns.

During the ceremony Liu Xiaoguang, the defense attache at the Chinese Embassy to Nepal, stated that over the past 92 years, the PLA has been following the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, carrying the aspirations of the Chinese people, fighting bravely and tackling all difficulties to advance the dignity, prosperity and strength of the Chinese people.

Distinguished guests including Chief of Nepal Police, IGP Sarbendra Khanal, and senior officials from security agencies along with representatives from various diplomatic missions were present in the program.
