Discipline and decency

Nepal Army has been mired in public controversy following the event on Saturday. Using the open grounds of Tudikhel for army drills and trainings do not invite discussions, criticisms or oppositions from the public. But a song and dance programme with foreign and national artists raised some eyebrows. Misusing Tudikhel for an entertainment programme even if it was organised by Nepal Army Wives Association for the benefit of earthquake victims has dented image of the army which is supposed to maintain discipline and decency.

A senior officer in uniform reaching the airport to welcome a foreign artist has added a new dimension to the issue. Army officers and personnel being deployed in a non-military programme is another uncomfortable situation. Opening of VIP room in the airport to welcome the artist made matters worse. At a time when the country has not been able to recuperate from Indian blockade, incidents like these add insult to Nepalis' injury. Nepal Army, one of the dependable institutions of Nepal, should have been cautious about this sensitive matter. Defence Ministry's probe into the matter is timely.

Political instability in the country for last few decades have made people interested in Nepal Army. People think that royal monitoring and control has been lifted and the army's independence has boosted after monarchy's fall. The army's rights have indeed increased in last few years and thereby it is expected to be more sensitive to people. Activities and modalities of a body that functions with taxpayers' money will be subject to commentaries. Army leadership should take it into stride and allow space for relevant recommendations.

Nepal Army has built a praiseworthy image so far. At a time when the country is still in transition because of instable politics and threats of different shapes and sizes to national unity still exist, only a highly confident army can make people feel safe. That is why we expect the army leadership to further brighten army's image. Incidents like foreign artists getting high military honour should be exceptions rather than norms.
