CIEDP team reaches Jumla for investigation into enforced disappeared

Jumla, 27 November (2020) - The Commission of Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP) Nepal has reached Jumla. A team headed by CIEDP commissioner Dr Gangadhar Adhikari held a meet with journalists in Jumla on Thursday. 

On the occasion, Dr Adhikari said the team reached the Karnali to identify the citizens who were enforced disappeared by the state and then rebel sides and receive the complaints of those left in course of the process for identifying the disappeared in the previous time. 

“The scope of work of the commission is to probe and investigate”, he said, adding the main goal of the mechanism is to prevent the repetition of conflict in the future. 

The commission had so far received 3,223 complaints from across the country, he said, adding that Karnali alone had received 404 complaints on enforced disappearances. 

Dr Adhikari further said that the commission could not work in an anticipated manner due to the effects of coronavirus. The commission team would hold discussions with stakeholders in Jumla as part of identification, investigation and probing of the enforced disappeared.
