UML formally splits, Madhav Nepal applies for new party at Election Commission
Kathmandu, 18 August (2021) - CPN-UML has formally split on Wednesday.
Madhav Kumar Nepal faction in UML has submitted an application at the Election Commission to register a new party.
Nepal himself is the chairman of the proposed party. The central committee of the party will have 95 members and Jhal Nath Khanal will be the senior leader.
Nepal faction has applied for the registration of new party after President Bidya Devi Bhandari issued an ordinance on political party that allows 20 percent members of the parliamentary party of an original party to break away and form a new one.
The faction had helped Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to become prime minister. The government issued the ordinance to reward the faction.
Name of the new party has been proposed as CPN-UML Socialist while electoral symbol is to be finalized.
Earlier the party had tried to propose "open book" as the electoral symbol but that symbol has already been taken by another party.
Despite attempts to unite party for a long time, the party has split.
But most of the standing committee members loyal to Nepal faction have not participated in the registration process of the new party.
