Asta Laxmi Shakya resigns from post of Bagmati chief minister

Hetauda, 27 October (2021) - Chief Minister of Bagmati Province Asta Laxmi Shakya has resigned from the post on Wednesday.

She announced her resignation at the provincial assembly.

On 18 August 2021, Shakya became the chief minister at a time when CPN-UML was about to be divided. She was in minority in the assembly from the very beginning.

Shakya could remain the chief minister for only 71 days. She was the first female chief minister in Nepal.

She said that Bagmati Province government had accomplished all works in a transparent manner and there are very few arrears. The province government has set up charter in all ministries to make them women-friendly, she informed.

CPN-UML enjoyed single party majority in Bagmati Province Assembly formed after 2017 elections. Dor Mani Poudel became the chief minister.

Shakya was in Madhav Nepal faction of CPN-UML when the party was about to split. Party establishment brought her to its side by offering the post of chief minister.

Nepal faction registered CPN-Unified Socialist, leading to the formal split of the party. It affected Bagmati Province Assembly as well.

CPN-UML had 55 members in Bagmati Provincial Assembly.

But 12 Members of Provincial Assembly left UML to join CPN-US and Shakya had miniroty support only.
