Excessive rainfall causes havoc in Sindhupalchowk
Kathmandu, 16 June (2021) - Excessive rainfall for the last three days has caused havoc in Sindhupalchowk district in central Nepal.
Flooded Melamchi and Indrawati rivers have damaged many houses in Helambu. Muddy and slushy water flows in these rivers.
Especially, wards 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 in Helambu Rural Municipality have borne the brunt of nature, Chief of Ward no. 2 Chhiring Gyalbu Lama told Lokantar.
He further informed that more than 60 people are missing in the rural municipality.
"Melamchi River has gone 15 meters upper than the normal level," Lama said. "The river is flowing 150 meters away from the normal course. We fear that the snow plateau must have burst."
He further informed that 39 people working at the fount of Melamchi Drinking Water Project are feared to have been swept away by the river.
Flood and landslides struck the village yesterday at 7 pm.
Chief of Ward no 5 Harka Bahadur Tamang said that heavy damages were incurred because no one sounded the warning signals.
Local, provincial and federal governments as well as Nepal Army and Nepal Police are deployed in rescue efforts.
